FROM SALERNO TO SORRENTO

Grand Hotel Salerno is exactly 60 km far from Sorrento.

Sorrento’s marina

Driving along the whole Amalfi Coast you get to Sorrento Peninsula after a journey of about 75 minutes. After passing by Vietri, Cetara, Maiori, Minori and Amalfi, the road goes up to Positano, on the crest of the peninsula, until Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, then goes down to Sorrento.

By bus, you have to take the line Salerno-Amalfi first, then the line Amalfi-Positano-Sorrento. In this case, you’d better think of buying the Unico Costiera ticket with 24 hour or 3 days of validity and planning a trip that includes many stops.
In high season, since the traffic on the coast road is heavy, you’d better travel by ferry, hydrofoil boat or Metrò del Mare, all departing from Salerno’s harbour.

THINGS TO SEE IN SORRENTO

The typical Sorrento lemons

Full of history, shrouded in legend, appreciated by kings and emperors of the past, retreat for musicians, philosophers and poets…Sorrento is a waking dream!
A day in Sorrento must start (or finish) with a coffee (or a limoncello) in Piazza Tasso, whose name comes from that of the famous poet born in Sorrento in 1544. Not far from there, you can find the Sant’Antonino Basilica, where the remains of the local patron saint are kept, and the beautiful St. Francis Cloister, an extremely suggestive place that regularly hosts art exhibitions, concerts and festivals. On your way out of the cloister don’t forget to look out of the panoramic terrace of the Villa Comunale to enjoy the spectacular view of Naples’ Gulf.

Don’t miss a visit to the Correale di Terranova Museum, where canvas of Neapolitan painters of XVII and XVIII centuries, archaeological finds of Greek and Roman periods, majolica, porcelain, pieces of work of the cabinet-makers of the Neapolitan and Sicilian schools are kept.
To appreciate in the best possible way the inlay techniques that made Sorrento famous all over the world you can admire the wonderful choir inside the Cathedral.

A BATHE FIT FOR A KING, OR RATHER…FOR A QUEEN

Sorrento’s sea

The easiest way to bathe in Sorrento is to go to St. Francis beach, reachable by special stairs made from the rocks, or to move towards Massa Lubrense to reach Puolo’s bay.

The real attraction, instead, are the famous Queen Joan baths, where the ruins of ancient Roman residence of Pollio Felice (I century b.C.) overlook the wonderful green sea.
